Playtime and Family Photos at Kadidjiny Park Melville
We took some family time earlier this week and managed to check off a (minor) bucket-list item at the same time. My wife and I actually came across Kadidjiny Park in Melville in different places and knew that we would need to take our daughter Rahni there for some playtime, and of course family photos. While researching local playgrounds to visit, my wife discovered the “A Coffee in the Park” website, which has become a great resource for parents of children who love to play outdoors, (and enjoy coffee). What a great idea! I visited the park recently to photograph a band at the Art Spark Music Festival, and discovered the amazing playground in the process. So when I came home raving about this amazing playground, it was old news…
So, a quick call to Nanni to invite her to join us, a visit to the bakery to pick up some afternoon tea, and we were on our way for an afternoon of adventure. As you will see from the photos, the playground looks like it comes from the pages of a Dr Seuss book, with random activities scattered throughout a very colourful ‘landscape’. While the playground is probably suited to children aged 2+, our 17 month old daughter still had a wonderful time exploring the landscape, playing on some of the equipment, and watching older children enjoying themselves. With a combination of carpet, sand, grass, soft-fall and some concrete, the environment is pretty safe for young children. I highly recommend this playground!
For the photographers among us, this series was shot exclusively on a Canon 5D Mark II, with the EF 35mm f/1.4 L Series lens. The main playground area is in somewhat of a hollow and is surrounded by large trees. That, combined with the late afternoon sun, made for lovely open shade and very even exposures for the most part. By positioning the sun in the background of the photos you can get stunning rim light / back light while exposing for the shaded skin.
